Making Noise for REACH School - May 25 Dance

This year's big REACH School fundraising dance will be held in the spring as usual, but this year's event will have a few exciting changes.

The dance will be held May 25 at Chambly Academy in St. Lambert. The live rock and roll band, which includes one of the parents from REACH School, will be "the Noise".

There will be an exceptional range of door prizes and draws, a full evening of great entertainment and exhibits to provide a glimpse of some of what an education at REACH entails on a daily basis, all presented in a rock 'n' roll theme.

Not sure exactly what the purpose of this website is. Not even sure either whether I would like my family to have anything to do with an "agglomeration" :)... but, a brief look at the site may be relevant for readers of this blog.

It appears to be a collection of listings, tips and testimonials offered in French only. It is not complete, nor reliable, although may be useful as a general orientation for some people.

For example, if you manage to find your way to click on "Liste des camps de jour arrondissements Saint-Hubert et Greenfield Park", it brings you to a pdf called: "Flash Loisir" (février), which has no information about day camps in it.

We are going to get in touch with these people to see if they would like to include some of our listings.

Sun 'n' Fun Special Needs Day Camp on Montreal South Shore

An inclusive day camp for kids with special needs is being offered on the south shore for five weeks this summer, from July 8 through Aug. 9. The day camp will be staffed by qualified bilingual staff and is open to all children while specialized in accommodating those with special needs of most all types.

The day camp is being run by RAPID and will be held in St. Barnabas Church at 95 Lorne Ave., with nearby access to parks, swimming, etc. Please read the notice below and go to the RAPID website for the registration form.

Run / Walk for Autism April 28, 2013 - Early Bird Registration Before Mar. 28

The annual Walk / Run for Autism organized by S.Au.S. (Soutien Autism(e) Support) in Candiac has grown in five short years to become one of the major high profile events for families dealing with special needs in the entire Montreal area.

Special Olympics Curling Club for the Monteregie

The first practice of the new Special Olympics Curling Club for the Montreal south shore area was held this past Monday.

There was an excellent turnout of coaches and participants and the club will be continuing to take place each Monday at the Otterburn Park Legion Curling Club, from 6:55 - 8:55 p.m.

There is still a possibility to accommodate more players. All people with intellectual disabilities are welcome to join. Men, women, girls, boys! No experience necessary.

Otterburn Park is located adjacent to Beloeil, a few minutes from the 116 highway.

New Special Olympics Curling Club for the South Shore

A new curling club for people with intellectual disabilities is being started in the south shore Montreal area, in Otterburn Park. The club is being started under the auspices of Special Olympics Quebec, with the intention of entering a team in the provincial championships this March 2 and 3 in Valleyfield.


The club will be open to adults and children, men, women, boys or girls, aged 9 or over. The participants will need to be able to function in a team situation semi-independently, as the ratio of coaches to participants is expected to be 1 : 4 or greater. The size of the group will be limited to 8 players, on a first-come, first-served basis.


The South Shore club will train at the Otterburn Park Legion Curling Club, with sessions every Monday evening from 7-9 p.m. The low price of $45 for eight sessions is made possible by a significant subsidy from Special Olympics Quebec.

The Special Olympics curling coaches will teach the rules, techniques and etiquette of the sport, as well as the all-round development of the athletes. They will act as role models and help the athletes towards personal success in all phases of the sport.

The coaches will also be focused on helping all the athletes to discover and develop their own potential and abilities. They will assist the athletes to build on their accomplishments, with a view to improving their skills surely and steadily.

 
The registration and initial training session will be held Jan. 14 at the Otterburn Park Curling Club, beginning at 6:30 p.m., with the early start for this day only. No special equipment is needed for participants, as brooms and sliders will be available at the club. Athletes are requested to bring extremely clean or new running shoes, which are not worn outside.
